UFX (Ultimate Fitness Challenge) Review

I completed my final UFX class at NYSC club today.   I have to say, the last four weeks have been tough, but fun.  The class draws greatly from Crossfit to provide an intense circuit style workout in a small group setting.

Before I get into a final review, here’s a recap of my final workout:

Warm up: 3 minutes of high knees, butt kicks, jacks and burpees

First set: (1 minute each, 3 times total)

  • Up and Overs on step
  • Walking Lunges holding weighted ball overhead
  • Box Jumps
  • Squat Burpees (low squat, touch ground, jump bring arms over head)

Second Set: (1 minute each, 3 times total)

  • Rope Swings
  • Kettle Ball Swings <— won’t miss these!
  • Double tricep extension
  • Fore arm plank to straight arm plank repetitions

Third Set: (3 times total)

  • Reach and gather—in a forearm plank I had to pull a rope with a kettle ball at the end and bring it across the floor.
  • Lower ab leg drops (15)

Cool down:

Light stretching

Review:

I attended six of the eight sessions provided complimentary by NYSC (normally $200 for members and non-members)

Trainers and Class Size:

We had two different trainers during the sessions both were great.  While on one hand I think having only one trainer would have allowed them to better track progression, I liked the variety of styles.  Both were motivated, knowledgeable and fun, but one moved at a much faster pace (he’s a certified crossfit instructor that makes you do more than you think you can or want to) and the other focused more on form and your comfort level. Both made me work incredibly hard, one almost brought me to tears—twice.

The class size was one to three people.  I actually liked having a few people suffering with me.  I felt like we really bonded—what up Pablo? But having a private session was cool too. Either way it’s such a small class, you can’t get away with anything! Honestly, you’re getting a personal trainer for a fraction of the price–$25 for an hour of training.

Workout:

While I sometimes dreaded going because I hate pain, I was really happy when class was over.  The workout was hard core a mix of serious strength training with bursts of cardio.  There was a lot of variety, so I never knew what was coming.  The constantly changing workouts were what I liked best about the class. I also appreciated being pushed to the limit, it takes a lot to get me out of my comfort zone, but these trainers did it.  The barre classes I took during this time seemed much easier in comparison.

Organization:

This was the area that was lacking a bit.  My first class was actually rescheduled and no one knew what was going on. A few times there was confusion with meeting spots or things started late.  While I am a go with the flow person, on days I didn’t have extra time in my schedule, it was frustrating.  While I think we were supposed to pre and post fitness evaluations, it never really happened.  Overall, the workouts and trainers more than made up for the occasional lapses in organization, but it’s something to be aware of. I imagine as the program continues things will become more organized.  UFX is still a very new program at NYSC and I think it will only get better.
